We all know that Seabiscuit (1933-1947) made a famous run at Santa Anita Racetrack and then retired to California. Did you know that California Chrome and Seabiscuit are distant cousins?
Seabiscuit was born in Kentucky, but bought by Charles S. Howard who was based in San Francisco. Seabiscuit one the Santa Anita Handicap in 1940 and didn’t run in the Triple Crown races, but he did beat War Admiral in 1938. War Admiral won the 1937 Triple Crown races.
Seabiscuit was the 1938 Horse of the Year.
There’s a statue of Seabiscuit at the Santa Anita Racetrack.
Seabiscuit and California Chrome both descend from Man o’War and Fair Play. California Chrome is descended from Fair Play through his dam line (Northern Dancer, Danzig and Raise a Native).
Native Dancer‘s dam Geisha was sired by Discovery whose sire Display was out of Fair Play. Danzig was also a descendant of War Admiral, son of Man o’War. Raise a Native is also descended from Man o’War. Seattle Slew is descended from War Admiral (Busher) and Fair Play (Alsab).
